Tur Dal 


  • 1 cup tur dal
  • ΒΌ tsp turmeric powder
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 1  tomato, chopped
  • 1/2  tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/4  tsp crushed Red chili
  • a pinch of asafoetida
  • 1 tsp ginger chopped
  • 1  tsp garlic chopped
  • 1 green chili chopped
  • for garnishing chopped coriander leaves and ginger julienne
  • salt as required


  1. Wash and soak Arhar Dal for 1 hour in the water.
  2. Boil dal in about three cups of water, along with turmeric, salt, Cook till tender and well blended.

  3. heat oil in fry pan. add cumin seeds. When  they begin to splutter. then add the ginger and  garlic and saute for 10-12 seconds. add the chopped onion and fry till transparent light brown. add turmeric powder, red chili crushed and asafetida.

  4. add the tomatoes. saute till the tomatoes become softened and oil separates from the spices now add dal and water, salt as you required stir and simmer the dal for 3 to 5 minutes 

  5. Garnish with coriander leaves, ginger julienne and green chili chopped.

  6. serve dal with Chapati or Rice parantha.
